Your mini first aid trainers

Hannah Dodd

Hi, my name is Hannah and I live on the beautiful Wirral peninsular. I am a mum to 3 lively children, Harry, Charlie and Grace and I am passionate about first aid. I have been a paramedic for over 17 years and I have gained a wealth of experience in many different emergency settings. I still work as a paramedic and thoroughly enjoy my job. I believe that everybody should have at least some basic first aid knowledge. As a paramedic I know how stressful dealing with sick and injured children can be and as a mum I know how frightening and distressing it can be, my aim of delivering the Mini First Aid courses is to give people the knowledge, skills and confidence to cope in an emergency situation.

THE UNMUMSY MUM - SARAH TURNER

There are a gazillion things I never seem to get around to doing (fixing the broken blind in our bedroom, getting some photos printed of ‘the baby’ who is almost two but still doesn’t exist on our walls, pinning down the coffee date I’ve been promising my neglected friend via WhatsApp for at least 6 months…) BUT this morning I finally got my arse in gear and ticked off something from my ‘Really Must Do’ list by attending a First Aid class designed specifically for parents, grandparents and carers of babies and young children. It took just two hours out of my morning and covered a whole host of stuff including what to do if a child is choking, how to deal with burns/breaks/bleeding and the basics of life-saving CPR for kids. If, like me, you haven’t done any First Aid training for a while (I don’t think I’d done any since school) I can highly recommend Mini First Aid (and I am NOT being paid for this post, I was just very impressed by Mini First Aid Devon’s class this morning. Other classes are available I’m sure).

The moral of this tale?
Remember always read the instructions and have your first aid kit to hand!!When you leave your Veet on for too long.....

Ok, so it’s one of those Saturday mornings when you have the time to ‘treat’ yourself with a DIY wax, BUT you’ve run out of wax! After a rummage through the hubbys drawer, Yes!.... Some oh so slightly out of date ‘mens only’ veet. Why ‘Men only’ I think, surely it’s only a marketing thing? It says leave on for 3 - 6 minutes.... I’ll do just 2, it will be fine.

Fast forward all of 30 seconds and my top lip feels a little tingly. My stubborn self is clinging onto my mantra ‘it will be fine’.

1m45s in and I’m a little bored so I start to read the instructions ‘FOR BACK AND CHEST ONLY’!

SH*T!..... I now realise that my top lip is numb - never a good sign. I rinse the cream off tentatively, afraid I’ll have no skin left; it’s still there - thank God!

NOW it’s stinging, kind of like a baby crowning!..... OH MY GOD I’M BURNING! I’ll be the laughing stock at the 2 year olds party we’re going to this afternoon - it’s a big deal.

I reach for the veet soothing wipe - it hasn’t lived up to its name.

SH*T, SH*T, SH*T... What now? In a moment of clarity, I remember I have my Mini First Aid kit in my changing bag down stairs.... I run down the stairs, whilst shouting to the hubby like a crazed woman, ‘burns gel, I need burns gel’...... I find and open the burns gel like I open chocolate when secretly eating from the kids - like a total mentalist! In a bid to come to my rescue, my husband trips over a toddler, worried that I’m actually seriously injured. I fumble around trying to open the sachet.... IT’s OPEN! Burns gel applied..... AND oh thank the lord above - it’s instantly cooling!

After 30 minutes of praying that the burns gel actually works on beauty DIY disasters, it did! Thankfully it really is like what I say to the parents I teach - burns gel is like a little bit of magic (I was never good at chemistry). And oh my, you’ll never realise how grateful you’ll be to be the owner of burns gel until you really need it. It’s pretty awesome for treating burns on little ones too!!

On the plus side, I now have a pout that would rival Angelina Jolie.... Every cloud, hey!

Mini First Aid Wirral

Our children learning to swim was
non-negotiable. They could choose whatever out of school activities they wanted to do but they had to learn to swim. End of!
It’s a basic life skill and they had to learn it. They started their journey with Water Babies Chester, Wirral, Runcorn & North Wales as tiny tots and then continued on with CJB Academy of Swimming - Wirral.
We now have 3 confident, strong, skilled and happy swimmers and this is why our holiday here at Centre Parcs Whinfell has been amazing and relaxed!
