When I was younger I always wanted to be a primary school teacher, as we know that never happened but it’s never stopped me thinking “what if?”  Well back in November I got a little taster and I mean ‘little taster’, of what it must be like to be a primary school teacher and it was hard work!

Mini First Aid Wirral offers 1 hour kids first aid classes for children aged 7-12 years and Early Years classes for younger children aged 3-6 years.  I was lucky enough to be invited into my boys school to teach the classes to all of the children, it was a busy but amazing 2 days!  Children are so much fun to be around; they are enthusiastic, entertaining, full of energy, inquisitive and have a massive thirst for new knowledge.  Each and every child came into the classes willing and excited to learn the skills on offer and best of all we had a lot of fun whilst doing it!

Our first aid class aimed at older children is a fun filled 1 hour class during which we cover CPR, choking, recovery position, burns, bumps, bleeds, breaks and we also cover the importance of knowing how to get help in an emergency situation.  I believe it is really important that our children have the skills and confidence to deal with emergency situations, I know I feel better knowing that my kids are now confident and prepared.

The Early Years class is aimed at children aged 3-6 years of age and is an action packed ½ hour class.  Although not strong enough to perform some techniques and maybe not mature enough to understand certain first aid procedures, younger children are still capable of being able to summon help and assist the casualty until that help arrives if we teach them how.   In this class we meet Big Ted and help him when he feels sick and cuts his knee, the children are encouraged to learn their address and the ‘999’ number and when to use it.  During the class we also read the story of “Freddie”, who is quite accident prone but saves the day when he helps his mummy who becomes poorly.

2018 is also the year for our brand new Early Years class, “Sit, Chop, Chew”.   I am really excited about this new class which is aimed at teaching younger children the importance of good safe eating habits and how we help someone who is choking.  This new class is interactive, exciting and I can’t wait to start delivering it to the children.

I’m very passionate that children should know the basics of first aid, as they really can make a difference.  As parents, we prepare and teach our children how to cross the road safely, not to talk to strangers, not to touch the open fire, wear a helmet when you’re on your bike and lots of other skills, so why not first aid?  Surely this is one of the greatest skills we can teach our children?

If you would like Mini First Aid Wirral to visit your school, nursery, Cub group, Brownie group, football club or anywhere else, including your own home, then get in touch and let’s get our children trained, competent and confident in some basic first aid skills.
